The Difference Between IEMs / Planar IEMs / TWS

The Difference Between IEMs / Planar IEMs / TWS
What are IEMs?

IEMs, abbreviation of In-ear Monitors, are devices used by musicians, audio engineers and audiophiles to listen to music or to hear a personal mix of vocals and stage instrumentation for live performance or recording studio mixing. They are also used by television presenters to receive vocal instructions, information and breaking news announcements from a producer that only the presenter hears. They are often custom-fitted to an individual's ears to provide comfort and a high level of noise reduction from ambient surroundings. Their origins as a tool in live music performance can be traced back to the mid-1980s.

With the development of IEMs (In-ear Monitors) and people's needs, IEMs with various price ranges and different drivers appear on the market. Now everyone can buy IEMs that suit them. There are different types of drivers that are currently being used in In-ear Monitors such as Dynamic Drivers, Balanced Armature Drivers, Planar Magnetic Drivers, Electrostatic Drivers, etc. Each of these drivers has its own characteristics, its own pros & cons, and delivers its own touch to the sound output.

HIDIZS is an acoustic brand that strives to recreate the essence of natural and authentic melodies. To date, Hidizs has developed and marketed products ranging from professional DACs & AMPs, portable HiFi music players, HIFI In-ear monitors, to various audio solutions. With over a million devoted users globally, HIDIZS products have gained popularity in countries like Europe, America, and Japan.

What are Planar Magnetic Driver IEMs?

Planar magnetic driver, its principle is called equimagnetic principle. In fact, this principle of energy conversion has been born in the audio industry for a long time, but there have not been many manufacturers producing such speaker products. Unlike the circular magnets of the dynamic driver, the magnets of the planar are parallel magnets distributed on both sides of the diaphragm. Like two planars, the diaphragm is sandwiched in the middle, and the diaphragm is covered with a thin layer of metal conductor. Usually, it is folded back on the diaphragm multiple times in a zigzag shape by printing or cutting. When there is a current signal passing through it, it will be subjected to electromagnetic force, and it will move in the gap between two planar magnets, thus making a sound.

The advantage is that the diaphragm can be made very large, and the force balance is distributed all over the diaphragm. These advantages give planar magnetic driver IEMs inherent advantages in dynamics and the amount of sound information. The disadvantage is that the sound unit is bulky, heavy, and difficult to drive. Generally, a dedicated front-end is required to drive well, and the price will not be very cheap, but now there will be more and more planar magnetic driver IEMs that are easy to drive.

It delivers a perfect audio experience that captures the enjoyment of multiple music genres all in one pair of IEMs.
What is TWS?

TWS is the abbreviation of True Wireless Stereo. TWS technology is also based on the development of Bluetooth chip technology. According to its working principle, the mobile phone is connected to the main earbud, and then the main earbud is quickly connected to the secondary earbud wirelessly, so as to realize the true wireless separation of the left and right channels of Bluetooth. TWS technology has been applied to the field of Bluetooth headphones, so a new product - TWS Bluetooth Earbuds has been born.

Why TWS is so hot now, let's take a look at its advantages:

First of all, no wired connection is required, and the left and right earphones form a stereo system through Bluetooth, which improves listening to songs, talking, and wearing. Without the shackles of wires, you are more flexible. Secondly, the outside of the true wireless Bluetooth earphones completely abandons the method of wire connection, and the single-sided earbud can work alone, and hands-free calls are under control. Finally, the design of the TWS earbuds is completely in line with the ergonomics of the ear, and it is natural and comfortable to wear, without the problem of entanglement of the previous earphone cable. TWS is small in size, easy to carry, easy to charge, improves the wearing experience, and basically applies to most scenarios.

But compared with IEMs, TWS actually has disadvantages:

The biggest problem is the short battery life. Because of the small size of the earbud, it is impossible to put a large-capacity battery in it. According to statistics, the battery capacity of a single earbud is between 25-60mAh, and the longest single use time does not exceed 3 hours. Even with a charging case, charging takes time, IEMs don't have this problem. Use it for as long as you want, it's always there waiting for you.

Secondly, the sound quality and sound effects of most TWS earbuds are not as good as IEMs. Many buyers have relatively high requirements for sound quality and sound effects. On some mainstream e-commerce platforms, We saw a lot of bad reviews saying that the sound quality of TWS is too poor. In order to have good sound quality and sound effect, in addition to having a good driver, tuning on the software is also required. On the other hand, the cavity structure design of the earphone will directly affect the sound quality and sound effect. IEMs have a great advantage in this regard.

Finally, there is the problem of noise reduction in complex environments. Among the TWS earbuds we tested, almost no noise reduction effect was achieved to our satisfaction. The native physical noise reduction of IEMs is very practical and effective. A good cavity can isolate almost all sounds from the outside world. If you want to achieve the best results, you can even customize a custom IEMs to fit your ears.

So, how should you choose the best earphones for you?

If you don’t have strict requirements on sound quality when choosing earphones, and you don’t like being bound by wires, and you pay more attention to portability, or you like to use earphones while exercising, then I recommend you choose TWS. On the other hand, if you prioritize top-notch sound quality, excellent noise cancellation, and the authenticity and sheer appeal of enjoying your music when choosing earphones, then you should go for IEMs. We believe that there is always an earphone on the market that can meet your needs.

All in all, IEMs and TWS each have advantages and disadvantages. As an audiophile obsessed with good sound quality, IEMs must be chosen. And we think Hidizs new product MP145 will suit you. The MP145 is an extraordinary wired planar IEMs that delivers exceptional audio performance.
